Frequently asked questions

What is Nearby Chat?+
Nearby Chat is a free, real-time platform for anonymous local chat. Join your city's group chat room or start a private conversation with people nearby — no account, no email, no phone number required.
Is Nearby Chat completely anonymous?+
Yes. No registration, email, or phone number is required — just pick a nickname. Other users see only approximate distance ("2 km away"), never your GPS coordinates. Optional Google login exists if you want to reserve your nickname across devices.
How does the location feature work?+
Nearby Chat uses your browser's geolocation API to place you in your city's chat room. Only approximate distance is visible to other users — your exact GPS coordinates are never stored long-term or broadcast.
Is Nearby Chat free to use?+
Yes, completely free. No subscriptions, no premium tier, no in-app purchases. Funded by the founders, not by ads or selling user data.
Do I need to download an app?+
No. Nearby Chat works in any modern browser — phone, tablet, or laptop. Android users can install the .apk for a smoother native experience (iOS App Store submission pending).
How is this different from Omegle or Chatroulette?+
No video / face camera. Local-first instead of random-global pairing. Continuous chat rooms instead of skip-next 1:1 pairings. Active moderation with auto-ban after 3 reports. See /vs/omegle for the full comparison.
Can I use it from any country?+
Yes. Nearby Chat works worldwide and supports 24+ language landing pages. Your city's chat room is automatically detected by location.

No face. No signup. Just your city.

Portland Anonymous Chat Room — Talk to Locals Near You

About the Portland Chat Room

Portland has its own dedicated chat room on Nearby Chat, built for the people who live in and around this large United States city. No account, no app, no profile — just locals from Portland talking in real time.

Privacy is the point in Portland: other users see only an approximate distance, never your exact location, and you never have to reveal your real name. That makes it an easy, low-stakes way to connect with people in the area.

Who will I meet in the Portland chat room?

People who are actually near you in Portland — locals, newcomers, and everyone in between. Because the room is location-based, you connect with people in Oregon, United States, not random strangers worldwide.
