How to start an anonymous chat in 60 seconds
Most "anonymous chat" apps still want your email, your phone, sometimes your face. This guide walks through actually-anonymous chat: a nickname, no account, working on any device.
- 1
Open NearbyChat in your browser
Go to nearby-chat.com. No app install required, though Android users can grab the .apk from /download for a smoother experience.
- 2
Allow location access (city level only)
When prompted, allow location. We use it to drop you in your city's public chat room. Your GPS coordinates are never shared with other users — only approximate distance.
- 3
Pick a nickname
Any name you want. You can change it later. We don't ask for email or phone number.
- 4
Start chatting
You'll land in your city's public room. Say hi. Click any user on the map to open a private 1-on-1 chat.
What actually stays anonymous (and what doesn't)
Anonymous on NearbyChat means:
- No real name required. Pick any nickname. We don't cross-reference it with anything.
- No email or phone. Optional Google login exists for reserving a nickname, but it's not required.
- No precise location shared. Other users see "2 km away" — not your address.
- No long-term identity. Clear browser data and you're effectively a new user.
Anonymous on NearbyChat does NOT mean:
- You can't be banned. Bad behavior gets you reported and banned like any moderated platform.
- Messages are encrypted end-to-end. They're server-stored so we can moderate — but cleaned every 30 days.
- The server has zero idea where you are. We need a city to put you in the right room. We just don't share it with other users.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to download anything?+
No. NearbyChat runs in any modern browser. Android users can install the APK for a smoother experience, but it's optional.
Do I have to allow location?+
Yes, at city level. Without it we can't put you in the right room. We don't share GPS — just approximate distance.
Can I chat without picking a nickname?+
No, you need a display name so other users can address you. It can be anything.
Is it safe to chat anonymously with strangers?+
Safer here than on Omegle / Chatroulette because there's no video and matching is local. But normal common sense applies: don't share identifying info, report bad actors, leave conversations that feel off.
Can I get my account back if I clear my browser?+
If you didn't link Google, no — that's the trade-off of true anonymity. Logging in with Google lets your nickname and karma follow you across devices.
