A WhatsApp alternative for the people you haven't met yet
WhatsApp solved one problem completely: messaging people whose phone number you already have. What it doesn't solve is the inverse — discovering new people in your area. NearbyChat is built specifically for that second problem. Anonymous nicknames, location-based discovery, no phone number, no contact import. Use WhatsApp for existing friends; use NearbyChat to find new ones.
TL;DR
These two apps don't compete head-on. WhatsApp = messaging contacts. NearbyChat = meeting strangers nearby. Most people end up using both for different jobs.

When NearbyChat is the better fit
- You're new to a city. Your WhatsApp contacts don't help if no one you know lives there. NearbyChat puts you in conversation with locals immediately.
- You don't want to share your number. Meeting strangers via WhatsApp means handing over your phone number — which is permanent and traceable. NearbyChat's anonymity is the default.
- You want serendipity. WhatsApp is intentional — you have to know someone's number to message them. NearbyChat is discovery-first.
- You want public city rooms. WhatsApp's closest equivalent is invite-link groups, which require knowing who to ask.
When WhatsApp wins
- Talking to family and existing contacts. WhatsApp is the default for billions of people. NearbyChat isn't trying to replace that.
- End-to-end encrypted messaging. WhatsApp's E2E is strong; NearbyChat is TLS-in-transit with 30-day server retention.
- Voice and video calls. WhatsApp does this; NearbyChat doesn't yet.
- File sharing with people you already know. Faster on WhatsApp via existing contact channel.

Frequently asked questions
Is NearbyChat trying to replace WhatsApp?+
No. They solve different problems — WhatsApp messages contacts, NearbyChat discovers strangers. Most people use both.
Can I add a NearbyChat user as a WhatsApp contact later?+
If both of you share numbers privately, yes — that's a normal "online to offline" handoff. NearbyChat doesn't do this automatically.
Is NearbyChat as secure as WhatsApp?+
WhatsApp's E2E encryption is stronger. NearbyChat uses TLS in transit and retains messages 30 days for moderation. For sensitive comms, Signal or WhatsApp is better.
Does NearbyChat have voice or video calls?+
Not currently — it's text and media chat only.
Can I make a private chat 1:1 like a WhatsApp DM?+
Yes — tap any user in the room to start a private chat. The chat is just between you.
Is NearbyChat free?+
Yes — fully free, no premium tier.
