Nearby Chat is designed to be simple, but knowing its features helps you get much more out of it. This guide covers everything from first login to having great conversations.

Getting Started (Under 30 Seconds)

1. Go to nearby-chat.com (or open the app)

2. Allow location when prompted — or type your city manually

3. Choose a username — this is your only identity. Pick something you're happy with.

4. You're in — you'll see your city's chat room

No email. No password. No account. That's it.

The City Chat Room

The city room is a public group chat for everyone currently active in your city. Messages are live — not stored, not permanent.

Tips for the city room:

• Start with a specific local topic — better responses than generic openers
• Ask for recommendations (restaurants, events, things to do)
• Respond to interesting messages — don't just broadcast
• The room is most active evenings local time

Private Messages (DMs)

See someone interesting in the city room? You can send them a private message.

How: Tap their username → "Send Private Message"

Private messages are end-to-end private — only you and the other person can see them. They're also ephemeral — nothing stored after your session.

The Map View

The map shows users near you in real time. Dots on the map represent active users — you can see their approximate distance (1km, 5km, etc.) but not their exact location.

How to use it: Tap a dot → see their username → message them directly. Good for finding people physically very close to you.

Changing Your City

If you're traveling or want to join a different city's room:

1. Tap the city name at the top

2. Type the new city

3. You'll join that city's room immediately

Privacy & Safety

Your location: Used to assign you to a city room. Never shown as precise coordinates to other users.

Your identity: Your username is your only identifier. Pick a username that doesn't reveal your real name.

Blocking: If someone is bothering you, tap their name → Block. They can't message you again.

Reporting: Tap → Report for behavior that violates the rules (harassment, spam, explicit content).

Tips for Great Conversations

Be specific: "Anyone know a good mechanic in [neighborhood]?" gets responses. "hi" doesn't.

Be curious: Ask questions. People love talking about their city and their experiences.

Be consistent: The room is different every day. Regular users recognize each other over time.
